VELVET

Halong Bay, Vietnam, March — The light is fading fast when our boat makes one last stop on a small island before anchoring for the night in a quiet cove on Halong Bay. I take a short walk alone, then head back as the sun starts to sink. I reach for my third camera body, loaded with high-speed infrared black and white film, a red filter over my lens. The infrared effect is going to be very subtle, not as dramatic as it would be mid-day in bright tropical sun. I'm pretty sure the grainy image made in the velvety soft light of dusk will create a dreamy, tranquil feeling for this shot. Content with my work that day, I drift into sleep hearing only the lapping of the waves against the hull. The stars are brilliant in the night sky.
