RUG WEAVERS

Djerba, Tunisia, Winter — An old friend told me to take the ferry over to Djerba, a Mediterranean island that has been an art and craft colony for thousands of years.  Here I found these three young women, weaving a rug in seamless harmony.  They work many long hours in low light, seated close to each other on low stools.  The pattern is very intricate and must be continuous as it travels back and forth across three sets of hands.  The only space for me to photograph them is looking right through the loom.  This obscures their faces but creates a softness and heightens the strength of the composition.  I feel I have just stepped back in time many millenia...
